Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability
The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
