Together Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the big city to the rural area for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, weaving in bits of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that arise in any relationship over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor never feels clumsy or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and state, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
